Chapter 10, Pt. 3

It was already dark when Sojan’s walls came into view. The trip had taken longer than it should have thanks to Talis not having a horse. Praesi halted them just in front of the wall and dismounted, signaling for the others to do the same. “Wait here. I’ll go notify the Gate Guards that we’ve arrived.”

Silay glanced over at Riya while they waited. She was anxiously shifting her weight from foot to foot. Silay gave her a reassuring smile. “It will be all right. And if not…” She paused so Riya could finish the sentence.

“…I’ll be fine.” She smiled backed at Silay. “I still can’t help but be a bit nervous.”

“With good reason.”

Silay glared at Edo. “That wasn’t necessary.”

He ignored her, and went back to silently waiting.

A moment later Praesi returned. “All is well. A house has been prepared for you all. Except you, boy.” She pointed at Talis. “You’re under arrest.”

“For what!?”

Praesi stared at him. “For kidnapping and ambushing travelers, for a start. And if you are very unlucky, for treason.”

“But I didn’t…” Talis looked to Silay desperately. “Tell them!”

Silay looked away, but Jarlen answered him. “Tell them what, Talis? The truth? You may have made a mistake, but mistakes have consequences. You broke the law. This is the price.”

“Enough!” Praesi grabbed Talis by the arm. “You’re coming with me. Edo, they’ve been given the house on Kallen Way, next to the Apothecary. You know the one?”

Edo nodded.

“Good. Take them there. And drop off the horses at the City Stables.” Praesi and the other guard left, marching Talis in front of them. Silay watched them leave.

“Will they really charge him with treason?”

Jarlen shook his head. “I don’t know. It’s possible.”

“But he did try to help. A little. At the end.”

Riya raised her eyebrows. “He also left you tied to a tree.”

“And you once stole Sojan’s Wardstone,” Edo growled. “And now you’re walking around free, so who knows what will happen to him. Nothing will tonight, at any rate.” Before anyone could answer him, he turned and started towards the gate. “Now come on and bring the horses. I’ll show you where to go.”
*sings* "Somebody's in trouble!" Also, Edo's being very grouchy again. I though he was over that?

Confession: I had Talis arrested because there were getting to be too many characters for me to keep track of. But don't worry, he won't be gone for long...or will he? Stay tuned to find out!
